Sydney Edward Gwilliam was the son of Sidney and Elise Edith Mary Gwilliam; husband of Dorothy E Gwilliam, of Dudley, Worcestershire. He enlisted into the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Gwilliam successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 99, from 19 January to 3 February 1944. His course report stated “Good worker, exits all confident and landings very good”. He was posted to A Company, 7th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Pte Gwilliam died of wounds on 16 June 1944, aged 29, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
