Samuel Thompson was the son of William and Agnes (Johnston) Thompson, of Belfast, Northern Ireland, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Rifleman Thompson successfully completed glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Rfn Thompson was killed in action on 24 March 1945, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany on 23 April 1947.
