Samuel Cassidy was the son of Hugh and Elizabeth Cassidy, of Belfast, Northern Ireland. He enlisted in General Service Corps and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Private Cassidy successfully completed his glider training and was posted to Support Company, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers and took part in operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
He was killed in action on 21 September 1944, aged 24, when the butt of his Bren gun hit the ground and the weapon went off whilst he was chasing a German tank, near Cronjeweg. He is known to have been buried next to the Dreyeroord Hotel, but his remains could not be found. He is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
