Roy Robert Rowland was the son of Robert and Ethel Rowland, of Oxford. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers and volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant Rowland successfully completed Glider Pilot training and was posted to 1st Wing, G Squadron, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in the first lift, Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Sgt Rowland was killed in action when his Horsa glider, Flight 10, Chalk number 518, crashed near Fijnaart on 17 September 1944, aged 23, and was originally given a field burial in Dinteloord Communal Cemetery.
He was re-interred to Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery on 27 May 1946.
