Ronald Arthur Morley, son of Matthew and Florence Morley, of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, enlisted into the Suffolk Regiment and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Morley successfully completed his glider training and was posted to 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Pte Morley was killed in action on Saturday, 24 March 1945, aged 24. Ronald was killed during or shortly after landing in the area of Hamminkeln, as the landing zone was ringed by German anti-aircraft guns and the battalion lost about half their total strength during the ten minutes it took them to land. (Ox and Bucks L I War Chronicle, Vol IV, page 309). He was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 16 April 1947.
