Lance Corporal Ronald Griffin

Ronald Griffin was the son of  William and Florence Griffin and husband of Mary Griffin of Fazeley, Staffordshire.

He served in The North Staffordshire Regiment prior to volunteering for airborne forces and joined 151 Parachute Battalion (later renumbered as 156 Para Bn) in India, serving with C Company as a Sergeant.

Ronald Griffin transferred to The King's Regiment in March 1943 but later returned to airborne forces as a member of A Coy, 11th Parachute Battalion.

He deployed with the battalion to Arnhem, as part of Operation Market Garden in September 1944, and is believed to have died when the remnants of the 1st British Airborne Division were being withdrawn to safety across the River Rhine. His body was recovered from the river in early October 1944.

Lance Corporal Ronald Griffin died on 25/26 September 1944, aged 25 years, and is buried at Rhenen General Cemetery, Netherlands.  He is also commemorated on a memorial outside St Ediths Church, Tamworth, Staffordshire.
