Lieutenant Robert Preston served with Airborne Forces attached to 2nd Battalion Ox and Bucks Light Infantry (Airborne) during the Second World War, and was killed during Op Varsity.
Robert Stoddart Preston initially served with The King's Regiment (Liverpool), gaining his commission on 17 October 1942 before transferring to Airborne Forces later in the war. He was attached to the gliderborne 2nd Battalion, Ox and Bucks Light Infantry (Airborne).
In June 1944, he took part in the Normandy campaign following D-Day on 6 June 1944, before returning to 6th Airborne Division returned to the UK in September 1944. Later, he was deployed with the Battalion to the Ardennes as the 6th Airborne were called into action to halt the German counter-offensive in the region during Winter 1944-5. After a brief respite in the UK, on 24 March 1945 Lt Preston took part in the Rhine Crossing, part of Operation Varsity.
Lieutenant Preston died on 24 March 1945. He is now buried at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, near Kleve, in Germany.
