Robert J L Paul, was known as 'Robin' Paul. His career spanned an interesting time as the Empire was winding down and colonial regiments were preparing to become part of their soon to be independent countries. He was commissioned on being called up for National Service with The Gloucester Regiment as a Officer Cadet 7 July 1956 and seconded to the 5th Bn of the Nigeria Regt where he served throughout Nigeria in 1956 and 1957. He became a 2nd Lt on 4 March 1958.
He then spent a while with the Colonial Office as a District Commissioner in Kenya, again in interesting times, before returning to the UK where he joined 10 PARA in 1965, serving as Platoon Commander and 2ic at 1 Company before moving on to OC Anti Tank Platoon, Intelligence Officer and OC Support Company. Robin was promoted to Acting Major in March 1973. He then moved to HQ 44 Brigade as a Forward Air Controller until it's disbandment in 1978, going on to retire in December 1985.
In his day job, Robin had a successful career in BP, and enjoyed motorcycling and skiing with old Regimental chums, with whom he remained in touch throughout his life.
Maj Robin Paul died in November 2024, aged 87. There was a short ceremony to inter his ashes at 12.00 at Clandon Wood Natural Burial Ground
