Robert George Downer,who was born on the Isle of Wight and commonly known as Bob, joined the Army in the Second World War in 1941, aged 18 years. His Army service, which included time with airborne forces, continued after the war.
Bob joined the police force in 1950 and retired in 1978. He passed away in September 2003.
