Robert Shepherd enlisted into the Army on 17 October 1960  and completed 'P'Coy in Feb 1961. He subsequently served  with 23 Parachute Field Ambulance from 1961-1973.

Commissioned in 1977, he held a number of posts until retiring from the Regulars in 1988 as Officer Commanding Army Element at  Princess Margaret Hospital, Wroughton. 

He was reappointed into the RAMC (TA) and continued to serve until retirement on 21 November 1998.
