Nineteen year old Richard Adderely was a member of 4 Parachute Squadron RE. He had parachuted into the battle of Arnhem on the second day, the 18 September 1944. The Squadron had become fragmented during the march from the drop zones towards Oosterbeek where his group, under Captain Harry F Brown, were ordered to take up defensive positions in the northern facing garden of Ommershof House.
On the day Sapper Adderley was killed there had been numerous attacks by German infantry along with mortar fire and shelling on the squadron positions.
In one of the attacks Sapper Adderley received a bullet or shrapnel wound to his head. He died instantly
