The unit saw action in Operation Market Garden, flying 624 sorties before the Company’s Air Despatch role was ultimately terminated when they were withdrawn on 20 September, having sustained the greatest number of mortalities of the five units involved in actions at Arnhem and Normandy. Uncle Richard was a despatch driver, also known as an air dispatcher and responsible for preparing loads and delivering supplies and equipment to military aircraft. They work with the Army and RAF to ensure that troops on the ground receive the supplies they need. We don't think he was a Despatch Rider.
