Peter Ernest Fitzgerald was the son of Peter and Ellen Harriet Fitzgerald; husband of Emily Elizabeth Fitzgerald, of Catford, South East London, he was granted a commission and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Lieutenant Fitzgerald successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 75A, from 26 July to 6 August 1943. His course report stated “Keen, jumped well, a fine example.” He was posted to H.Q. 3rd Brigade, The Parachute Regiment and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Lt Fitzgerald was killed in action on 19 August 1944, aged 30, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
