Norman William Shipley enlisted in the Royal Engineers and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Shipley successfully completed his parachute training on course number 64 at RAF Ringway from 10 to 21 May 1943. He was posted to 8 Platoon, C Company, 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Shipley was one of the lead scouts of his company and was killed in action by German machine guns on Utrechtsestraat whilst attempting to enter Arnhem after dark on 17 September 1944, aged 22. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
