Captain Norman G Hardie

Norman George Hardie was the son of George and Charlotte Hardie and the husband of Vera Hardie. He was granted a commission and volunteered for airborne forces.

Captain Hardie successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to 1st Wing, the Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Capt Hardie was killed in action, aged 27, on 20 September 1944, whilst leading a patrol hunting a German tank on Benedendorpsweg, when he was hit by a shell. He died instantly, while two others were wounded. He was given a field burial 100 yards east of the old church, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 8 August 1945.
