Michael Hendrick was the son of John and Annie Hendrick, of Darlington. He enlisted into the King’s Own Scottish Borderers and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Hendrick successfully completed his glider training and was posted to Support Company, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Hendrick was killed in action on 23 September 1944, aged 28, and was given a field burial in a mass grave by the side of a field near the junction of Oranjeweg and Bothaweg, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 28 August 1945.
