Maxwell William Downing, husband of Margaret Downing, of Kensington, Middlesex, was granted a commission in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lieutenant Downing successfully completed his Glider Pilot training and was posted as Adjutant to G Squadron, 2nd Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Lt Downing was killed in action on 22 September 1944, aged 33, and was given a field burial in a group of graves near the Van Hofwegen laundry at Oosterbeek. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 23 October 1945.
