Matthew Muir was the son of Andrew and Ann Muir, of Carnwath, Lanarkshire. He enlisted into the General Service Corps and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Private Muir successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 106, on 6 to 16 March 1944. His course report stated, ”Above average, versatile in stick jumping”. He was posted to 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Muir was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 19, and was given a field burial in an isolated group of graves by the side of a house 100 yards north of Wolfheze station, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 29 November 1945.
