Mark Linley enlisted for his National Service in the South African Defence Force and completed a PTI Course at the SA Army College in 1973. Thereafter he was posted to 5 South African Infantry Battalion Ladysmith, as a Physical Training Instructor.
Cpl Linley became a military parachutist in 1974, after successfully gaining his Wings he then returned to 5 SAI Battalion until completion of his National Service in 1975.
He was recalled from Reserve Forces in 1984, and as he had a pilot’s license was transferred into the South African Airforce. After passing his Wings test he was sent on Officer's Course at the SAAF College. He was posted to SAAF 105 Sqn, AFB Durban as a pilot with the rank of Candidate Officer.
Captain Linley retired in 1995.
