Leslie McMahon was born in January 1920, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, to James William and Ada (Hibbert) McMahon. His father, James, served in the East Surrey Regiment in WW1 and was awarded the British War and Victory Medals. After the war he worked as a Builder’s Labourer and moved his family to Kent. Leslie enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Corporal McMahon successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway and was posted to 6th Airborne Divisional Signals, Royal Corps of signals, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Cpl McMahon was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 25, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany, on 13 November 1946.
