Corporal Leslie Johnson

Leslie Johnson, son of Harry and Emily Johnson, of Witney, Oxfordshire and husband of Kathleen Joyce Johnson, of Witney, enlisted into The Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Corporal Johnson successfully completed parachute training on course 126 at RAF Ringway form 24 July to 4 August 1944. His course report stated ‘Very good performer. Very good pupil’. He was posted to 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion.

He took part in the 6th Airborne Division response to the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes, during Winter 1944-5.

Cpl Johnson was killed in action on 3 January 1945, aged 26, and was buried in Bure, Tellin, (Belgium) temporary burial ground. He was later reinterred in Hotton War Cemetery on 20 May 1947.
