Leslie George William Knightley was the son of William and Doris Knightley; and husband of Annie Knightley, of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.
He served in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War and was posted to 1st Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery.
Gnr Knightley volunteered for parachute training and qualified as a military parachutist on course 43, which ran at RAF Ringway between 20 December 1942 and 2 January 1943. The course instructors’ report records that he was a:‘Good type – asset to any section.’
He was later promoted to Lance Bombardier and died in North Africa during preparations for the Italian Landings.
L/Bdr Knightley died on 3 September 1943, aged 22 years, and is now buried in Enfidaville War Cemetery, Tunisia.
