Leslie Charles Gemmell was the son of William and Alice Gemmell, of West Derby, Liverpool. He enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Gemmell successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 73 from 19 to 28 July 1943. His course report stated ‘an average type, has jumped well in sticks’. He was posted to Mortar Platoon, Support Company, 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He took part in an operation in Italy and Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Private Gemmell was wounded with shrapnel in the back and died of his wounds in Stalag XIB at Soltau, Germany, on 9 February 1945, aged 21. He was given a field burial at Orbke, Germany and re-interred to Becklingen War Cemetery on 12 August 1946.
