Kenneth John Metcalfe, son of John and Kathleen Metcalfe, and husband of Violet Metcalfe, of Pauls Grove, Hampshire, enlisted into the Royal Army Service Corps.
Lance Sergeant Metcalfe volunteered for airborne forces and was posted to the 11th Parachute Battalion (11th Para Bn).
On 18 September 1944 11th Para Bn went on the second lift to Arnhem during Operation Market Garden. The aircraft that L/Sgt Metcalfe flew to Arnhem on Dakota C47 42-93001 crashed near Rhenen. L/Sgt Melcalfe was to be the last man to jump in his stick, his body was found inside the Dakota wreckage.
Lance Sergeant Metcalfe died on 18 September 1944, aged 28 years old. He is now buried at Rhenen General Cemetery, at Rhenen near Utrecht.
