Joseph Walker was the son of James and Sarah Walker, of Bury, Lancashire and the husband of Irene Walker. Private Walker enlisted into the Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Pte Walker successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to D Company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regt. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Walker was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 22. He was originally buried by Local Air Raid Wardens in the Onder de Bomen General Cemetery at Renkum and reinterred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 24 August 1945.
