Joseph Thomson was the son of William and Mary Thomson, of Motherwell, Lanarkshire. He enlisted in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers and volunteered for airborne forces.
Corporal Thomson successfully completed his glider training, and was posted to Support Company, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers and took part in operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Cpl Thomson drowned on 26 September 1944, aged 29, and his body was recovered by the Germans from the river Rhine on 3 October 1944 and buried in Rhenen General Cemetery.
