Joseph Pere enlisted in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Pere successfully completed his glider training, and was posted to Support Company, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers and took part in operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Pere died of wounds as a POW, on 28 September 1944, aged 24, in the Emergency Hospital Haus Aspel near Rees. He was originally buried in the Halden Cemetery and was reinterred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 24 March 1947.
