Joseph Parker enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Driver Parker successfully completed glider training and was attached to 133 Parachute Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Dvr Parker was killed, aged 19, on the LZ (Landing Zone), on 18 September 1944. He was seen lying dead on the floor of the crashed glider CN (Chalk Number) 1025, together with Dvr John James. It was already severely burning and the bodies could not be recovered due to the intense heat. (Roll of Honour, 5th revised edition, 2011) Dvr Parker has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek memorial to the missing.
