Joseph Henry Gibson, son of Mr and Mrs J Gibson and husband of Lilian Gibson, of Ryhope, County Durham, enlisted into The Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Gibson successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to the 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regt. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Gibson was killed in action on 23 September 1944, aged 29. He received a field burial in an isolated group of graves in woodland west of the road near Oosterbeek and was re-interred in Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 6 September 1945.
