John Wightman was born in Dumfriesshire and lived in Cumberland, he enlisted into the Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Wightman successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Wightman was killed in action on 25 September 1944, aged 29. He was originally given a field burial but the location was not recorded. Civilians from Oosterbeek took his remains to the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery.
