Son of John Phillip & Alice May Ross of Neasden, Middlesex.
After volunteering for the airborne forces, having previously served with the Royal Norfolk Regiment John was sent to RAF Ringway for parachute jump instruction. He was on Course 80, which ran from 30 August to 9 September 1943. His instructor noted this about John's performance on the course: "Keen, jumped well, needs more 'go' , appears sloppy". After successfully completing this course he was posted to The 9th Parachute Battalion.
John was sadly killed killed on 6 June 1944 during Op Overlord. At this time he was attached to The 3rd Para Brigade HQ
