Sergeant John William Baynes, husband of Mary Baynes, of Carlisle, served with 3rd Parachute Battalion. He took part in the North African campaign, and was posthumously awarded a Mention in Despatches.
Sergeant Baynes died on 17 August 1943, aged 29 years old. He is now commemorated on the Memorial at Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery, Tunisia.
