After successfully completing Pre-Para (P Coy) as Best Recruit of his Cadre, completed his parachute training and descents at RAF Abingdon awarded wings, John Victor Proffitt served for three years with the 12th/13th (Yorks and Lancs) Battalion, The Parachute Regiment from 1964 - 1967.
In that time he took part in several 'Cold War' exercises in South Wales and Northern England that was regarded as defence service to United Kingdom. John did NCO training at Hereford and at Grace Road Drill Hall Barracks and represented Liverpool in the 1966 Boxing Championships at London.
On leaving the regiment John served in the Combined Emergency Services operation of the 'Torrey Canyon' ship disaster off the coast of Cornwall, before leading Pegasus Overland Expedition 1968 over deserts across the world.
