John Richard Koster was the son of Police Sergeant Edward Orford and Dorothy Florence Koster, of Long Acre, London. He enlisted into the Devonshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
His brother, Flt Sgt (Observer) Sydney Orford Koster, RAFVR, was killed in action on 4 February 1943, aged 27. He is buried at Tripoli War Cemetery, Libya.
Private Koster successfully completed glider training and was posted to 12th (Airborne) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Pte Koster was killed in action on 10 June 1944, aged 24. He was given a field burial at Le Bas de Ranville and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France on 29 June 1945.
