Private John McAndrew

04 Jan 1945

Private John McAndrew served with 13th (South Lancs) Parachute Battalion and took part in the Ardennes campaign. Museum records note that he had previously served with The S.Staffs Regiment from 29 March 1939, before volunteering for the service with the airborne forces. 

John was successfully parachute jump trained at RAF Ringway on Course 87. This course of 8 jumps ran between 13 and 26 October 1943. His jump instructor noted this about his performance:

"Tries hard, rather slow"

He was injured on the first day of the Battle of Bure and died of his wounds a day later on 4 January 1945, aged 26 years old. He is now buried at Leopoldsburg War Cemetery, Belgium.
