Lance Corporal John Kenneth Roughton was enlisted into The Green Howards and volunteered for airborne forces while serving in the Middle East.
He joined the 10th Parachute Battalion in Kabrit and later deployed with the battalion to Italy.
L/Cpl Roughton took part in the divisional assault to capture the Rhine crossings at Arnhem during Operation Market Garden as a member of Support Company's mortar platoon. He made an opposed drop, under enemy fire, on the second lift and was later wounded in the battle, which resulted in him being taken as a Prisoner of War.
