Private John James Hayes, son of James and Rose May Hayes, of East Dulwich, London, volunteered for The Parachute Regiment and attended parachute training course number 85 at RAF Ringway between 29 September and 10 October 1943. His course report stated he was 'an excellent performer'.
Lance Corporal Hayes served with 12th (Yorks) Parachute Battalion. He took part in the Normandy campaign, during Op Overlord.
Lance Corporal Hayes died on 22 August 1944, aged 20 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
