John James Caves was the son of Jack and Ann Caves, of Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He enlisted in the Royal Ulster Rifles and volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant Caves successfully completed glider pilot training and was posted to B Squadron, 3 Flight, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Sgt Caves died, age 22, on 31 March 1945 as a result of aerial activity at Halle (strafing/bombing by allied aircraft?) whilst at Stalag XIB Soltau, and was first buried in Halle (Gertrauden Cemetery),30 kilometres north west of Lepzig, Germany. He was re-interred to Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery on 22 May 1947.
