John Henry Crimmel, son of Henry and Maud Crimmel, enlisted into The Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Crimmel successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to B Company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion, the Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Crimmel died on 21 September 1944, aged 21. Battle of Arnhem Roll of Honour (5th Edition 2011) states ‘ Pte Crimmel is known to have been killed instantly at the Westerbouwing, when an enemy tank opened fire at close range. The platoon positions were overrun, and the private had to be left behind’. He is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial, for those with no known grave.
