John Henry Campbell was the son of John Maxwell and Grace Ellen Campbell, of Moss Side, Manchester; husband of Lilian Westwood Campbell, of Moss Side, Manchester and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Private Campbell successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 108, from 20 to 29 March 1944. His course report stated, “Average – slightly nervous – keen”. He was posted to 12th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Pte Campbell was killed in action on 22 August 1944, aged 32, and was given a field burial at Pont Leveque and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 26 October 1945.
