John Glyn Owens enlisted into the General Service Corps during the Second World War. He was serving with The Royal Ulster Rifles when he volunteered for airborne forces in July 1943.
Lance Corporal Owens qualified as a military parachutist on course 78 which ran at RAF Ringway in August 1943 and served in 8 Platoon, C Company, 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion. His course report reads: ‘Cheerful. Fearless Jumper.’
He jumped into Normandy on D Day 6 June 1944 and later saw action in the Ardennes, the Rhine Crossing and as part of the 6th Airborne Division advance to the Baltic.
Once the war in Europe ended the Battalion was moved to the Far East with the 5th Parachute Brigade between 1945-6, after which it was returned to the 6th Airborne Division in Palestine.
L/Cpl Owens was demobbed in June 1947.
