John Fairbanks, was born in Germany and lived in Middlesex, the Nephew of Hersch Fuks, of Bondi, New South Wales, Australia, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Fairbanks successfully completed his parachute training and was posted to A Company, The 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion. He saw active service in Normandy, the Ardennes, and Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Pte Fairbanks was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
