John Evans was the son of Sarah Wise, of Astley Bridge, Bolton, Lancashire. He enlisted in the Cheshire Regiment, and volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant Evans successfully completed Glider Pilot training and was posted to D Squadron, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Sgt Evans was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 26, when his glider crashed and was destroyed by fire on the Landing Zone west of Wolfheze and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
