John David Hope enlisted as a National Serviceman in November 1954 into The Royal Engineers and he served in Egypt, The Sudan and Cyprus from 1954 to 1956.
In 1960 he enlisted into 562 Company RASC (Parachute Brigade Transport) TA, then having moved to Thetford he transferred to 927 Squadron, Royal Corps of Transport (TA).
He was promoted to Sergeant in 1966 and a year later he transferred to 562 Parachute Squadron Royal Corps of Transport (TA). Sgt Hope attended Para Basic training at Abingdon in September 1967.
He went on annual camp to Cyprus in February 1969.
During his ‘Para’ career Staff Sergeant Hope was interviewed for his civilian company’s magazine Shell BP Authorised Distributors Magazine at a pre training camp for jumping into Arnhem at Stanford Battle Area in Norfolk (which can be viewed opposite). At the 25th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden, 10 PARA and 562 Para Sqn RAC (TA) jumped into Ginkle Heath on 15 September 1969.
S/Sgt Hope left the army in 1970.
He now lives in Australia.
