John Brown Smith was from Cambuslang in Scotland. After he received his National Service papers John decided to become a regular instead. He joined The Parachute Regiment in 1958. John successfully passed parachute jump instruction at RAF Abingdon on course 468 in 1958. His course report lists him having the rank of Private and being part of "Rec. Coy".
John then joined I PARA.He served in Cyprus, Bahrain where he deployed to Aden. He saw action in ‘ad Dimnah war’ (see attached pic of certificate) as well as other places.
In 1966, with the rank of Sgt., he was posted to 10 PARA as an instructor for 2 years. He then returned to I PARA. John and his family lived in Palace Barracks during the early 1970s.
He was at ‘Bloody Sunday’ (patrols / A coy). Later on John was posted to 3 PARA. Before leaving the Army had a short time as SPSI with 15 PARA in Glasgow.
John left the Army in 1977 with the rank of C/Sgt. He sadly passed away in 1995.
