Corporal James William Murphy was the son of Thomas and Alice Murphy, of Newcastle-on-Tynem and husband of Ellen Murphy, of Jesmond, Newcastle-on-Tyne. He also had a daughter called Margaret.
He served with 1st Airborne Division Workshops, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.
He died between 25-26 September 1944, aged 34 years old. He is now buried at Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
His brother Dennis was in the RAF and survived the war.
