Signalman James Sparks, son of Charles and Ellen Sparks, of Glasgow, served with 6th Airborne Divisional Signals, Royal Corps of Signals. He took part in the D-Day glider-borne landings early on 6 June 1944 in Normandy, during Op Overlord.
Although the exact circumstances are difficult to confirm, it would appear likely he was involved in the early defence supplemented by gliderborne infantry of the bridges captured by the Coup de Main force near Ranville.
Signalman Sparks died on 9 June 1944, aged 22 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
