James Shirley enlisted into the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, and volunteered for Airborne Forces.
Private Shirley successfully completed parachute training on course number 111 at RAF Ringway from 10 to 17 April 1944, and was posted to 8th (Midlands) Parachute Battalion.
Pte Shirley died of wounds on 22 January 1945, aged 22, and was buried in Ciney Temporary Burial Ground (Belgium). He was later reinterred in Hotton War Cemetery on 21 May 1947.
