Private James Clough

James Clough, son of William and Olive Clough, of Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, enlisted into The Royal Armoured Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Clough successfully completed parachute training on course 110 at RAF Ringway on 4 March to 14 April 1944. The course report states: 'Pte Clough: Humorous. Reliable in A/C (aircraft). Good performance.'  He was then posted to A Company, 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion.

He took part in the 6th Airborne Division response to the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes, during Winter 1944-5.

Pte Clough was killed in action on 3 January 1945 during the Battle of Bure, aged 20. He was given a field burial in Bure, Tellin and later reinterred in Hotton War Cemetery on 20 May 1947.
