Jack Edward Crates was the son of George Thomas and Sarah Fanner Crates, of Bristol, he enlisted in the Gloucestershire Regiment and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Lance Corporal Crates successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 88, from 18 to 30 October 1943. His course report stated “Hard working – reliable – average performer.” He was posted to 13th Battalion (2/4th Bn. The South Lancashire Regiment), The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
L/Cpl Crates was killed in action on 8 August 1944, aged 23, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
